Mertz Tosses Complete Game Gem as Bulldogs Edge Ocean County, 4-3
PARAMUS, N.J. — Behind a complete-game performance from right-hander Tyler Mertz, the Bergen Community College baseball team held off a late push from Ocean County College to secure a 4-3 victory Tuesday afternoon at the Bulldogs' home field in Paramus.
Mertz, who went the distance, scattered 10 hits over 7 innings, allowing three earned runs while striking out three and walking four. His efficient outing kept the Bulldogs in control, despite Ocean County's attempts to rally in the later innings.
Bergen's offense was led by Domenic Maucione, who went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate. Leadoff man Trevor Eastmansparked the Bulldogs early with a triple and scored twice, while Shawn Calhoun and Noel Espinal each delivered RBI singles to help pace the attack.
Defensively, Bergen overcame three errors and leaned on timely pitching from Mertz to limit damage and strand 13 baserunners by Ocean County.
With the win, Bergen continues to build momentum heading into the final stretch of Region 19 play. The Bulldogs totaled 8 hits, executed on the base paths, and capitalized on three costly errors by Ocean County.
