Bergen Women’s Basketball Begins Season with 56–38 Victory Over Queensborough
PARAMUS, N.J. – The Bergen Community College women's basketball team improved to 1–0 overall (1–0 in Region 19) with a commanding 56–38 win over Queensborough Community College on Tuesday night at the BCC Gymnasium.
After a tightly contested first half, Bergen found its rhythm in the second, outscoring the Tigers 37–23 over the final two quarters. The Bulldogs' balanced offense and strong rebounding proved to be the difference as they dominated the glass, holding a 65–45 edge in total rebounds and posting 28 points in the paint.
Sophomore forward Fonquasia Slade led the Bulldogs with an impressive 21 points and 12 rebounds, recording her second consecutive double-double to open the season. Freshman guard Tiara Duran added 9 points, 9 assists, and 5 rebounds, showcasing her playmaking ability on both ends of the court. Ashley Urquia provided a spark off the bench with 12 points on 4-of-11 shooting, while Sonja Syla nearly had a double-double of her own with 9 rebounds and 4 points.
As a team, Bergen shot nearly 30% from the field, but their defense set the tone—forcing 23 turnovers and holding Queensborough to just 23% shooting on the night. The Bulldogs also capitalized on second-chance opportunities, scoring 14 points off offensive rebounds.
For Queensborough, Samantha Devivo led all scorers with 16 points, while Amya Haley contributed 7 points and 7 rebounds.
Head Coach Pekarsky praised his team's energy and defensive effort:
"We're starting to build an identity around toughness and rebounding," he said. "Everyone contributed tonight, and it's great to see our chemistry growing this early in the season."
